Machine of Living
Complex Studio | 4th Year, 2nd Semester | 2021 | Arch. Eric Schall | In collaboration with: Gilad Hod
This project is a study about the relationship between man, architecture and environment. Is it possible for architecture to transform shortage into abundance? We started by reaching Dubai's climate to see if we can use it for our architectural benefit.
We saw the tree as an analogy for a building in a harsh environment as Dubai. A tree can create a microclimate that can react to this harsh environment. It creates for itself a safe and protected habitat while repurposing the wind and the sun to its own benefit. Also, the tree trunk allows the tree's branches to grow freely in accordance with its surrounding environment. While every part of the tree is connected and feeds one another, through these aspects we tried to view our project.

Evaporative Cooling Facade

Our mashrabiya is designed to use the abundance of humidity and sun to create a cooler and more comfortable micro-climate where visitors and residents can enjoy. The cultural aspect of the mashrabiya creates a more connected building to its surrounding and can allow the local residents privacy while also connecting them to the environment. .

The Tower as a Tree

Each program has green areas that function as living machines and create natural environments throughout the tower. For example, the hotel program where the living machines are used to direct people and create a sensory space.
